Edward Macdowell s Of A Wild Rose From Woodland Sketches

Edward MacDowell’s â€Å"To a Wild Rose† from Woodland Sketches (1896) American born, but European-trained, Edward MacDowell is known as one of America’s prominent composers during the Gilded Age. With the rise of musical nationalism in America, MacDowell composed Woodland Sketches in 1896, which comprised of ten piano pieces whose titles refer to the American landscape and his personal experiences. The most well-known piece of the ten is â€Å"To a Wild Rose.† â€Å"To a Wild Rose† highlights MacDowell’s skills as a composer to harvest deep emotions and impressions from the listener from a simple motive; however, it was also an attempt for MacDowell to claim an identity as an American composer. In April 1876, MacDowell’s mother took him to Paris to attend the Conservatoire, where he studied piano with Antoine F. Marmontel (Pesce). Dissatisfied, MacDowell went on to Germany in 1878, which helped further his career (Pesce). The beginni ng of MacDowell’s success as a composer came with the publication of his Erste Modern Suite by German firms (Pesce). Edward MacDowell then married Marian Nevins, a fellow American, and settled in Germany from 1885 to 1888 where he would devote himself exclusively to composition (Pesce). Due to financial difficulties, MacDowell would decide to return to America in the autumn of 1888. Beowulf Selfish Hero Essay - 996 Words

The Selfish Hero In the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf, the stupendous hero’s many great deeds often appear to be for other’s benefit, yet Beowulf’s final conquest exposes his lust for glory and fame, thereby showing his lack of concern for anything else. This lust for immense glory and fame feeds his ego and causes his death and the imminent downfall of his great people the Geats. Throughout the poem, Beowulf’s deeds seem marvelous and good, yet in end his deeds are shown to be done solely out of lust for glory. The first indication of this occurs when Unferth interrogates Beowulf on Beowulf losing a simple race. Beowulf immediately counters this criticism with a boast stating he lost the race to save sailors, â€Å"From now on sailors would†¦show more content†¦Again in this fight, he only wins by finding a magic sword, but no one questions his luck and the people of Heorot celebrate his great triumphs. Thus, through his unquestioned luck, Beowu lf grows greatly in fame and glory and he enjoys it. Finally, after many years, Beowulf goes on to face his final opponent; the Dragon. After the Dragon has been set on a rampage against the Geats, Beowulf declares in his last boast that, selfishly, he will defeat the Dragon alone, â€Å"Beowulf spoke, made a formal boast for the last time: I risked my life often when I was young. Now I am old, but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning† (2510-14). Beowulf’s emphasis in his formal boast is about â€Å"the glory of winning† instead of expressing concern for his people. Beowulf, this entire time, has not been fighting monsters for the Geats or to help others. In this formal boast he directly reveals his true intentions of gaining glory. He even states right afterwards that if he were stronger he would fight the dragon without a weapon, just as he did Grendel, â€Å"I would rather not use a weapon if I knew any other way† (2 518-19), but alas he has grown old and realizes he needs the help of a blade to slay the Dragon. Then he speaks to his comrades about the battle, stating that he alone will fight the Dragon and must either win the fight with courage orShow MoreRelatedEssay on Does the Hero Decline in the Epic of Beowulf?1482 Words   |  6 PagesDoes the Hero Decline in Beowulf?      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Beowulf, a rousing Old English poem of man and monster, narrates the rise and fall of a superhuman hero named Beowulf. Cyber Bullying Danger And Need Essay Example For Students

Cyber Bullying : Danger And Need Essay Cyber bullying has always been an issue but no one really seems interested in it anymore. It’s like it’s an old fact that no one really cares about after hearing so much about it, however it is still affecting people all over. Those involved in cyber bullying are in danger and need help. There are many ways to help but one must first try to understand more about how to stop cyber bullies and what they’re doing to affect the people. Cyber bullying is widely known as a source of hate and depression on the internet, and the world needs to be rid of it for good. Cyber bullying is still here, it’s simply not talked about enough. Bullying itself has been around forever, however in more recent years with the internet growing and more people going online than ever, there has been an increase in what people call cyber bullying. Cyber bullying itself could not have existed before the internet because it is, well,†¦ cyber. The word cyber itself means online and people can use the easy and sometimes anonymous communication on the internet as a mask to bully someone. Many cyber bullies don’t actually do any bullying in person, and many cyber bullies would not strike the average person as a mean individual. Anyone that feels like cyber bullying can do it whenever they feel like it. In many cases their strongest tool for bullying is their words. They don’t need to be a large kid or muscular, they just need to be in a bad mood. Another thing to take into account is that many don’t consider cyber bullying an issue unless it has happened to them or a loved one. Many parents that realize their child has been or is being cyber bullied had no idea in the first place. The furious ranting was allegedly over a minor dent – more like a scratch – on th. . y persistent and sometimes people are faced with groups of people harassing them. This is a harder problem to fix but you still follow the same steps of keeping the messages, telling people that care about you like your teachers, parents and friends. Many people seem to forget that, no matter what, there is always someone that cares about them. Bullying has been around forever, but cyber bullying is just getting started. People all around the world have fallen victim to cyber bully attacks. Evidence shows how dangerous cyber bullying can be to the victim and they deserve better. Cyber bullying is commonly known as one of the terrible things that happens on the internet, and we need to get rid of it for good. The evidence is everywhere, and there are plenty of ways to help. People need to take a stand against the disaster that is cyber bullying and put a stop to it.
